A Haitian Diary Part 1
In 1991 after “Baby Doc” Duvalier was thrown out of Haiti, free elections were held and Father Jean Bertrand Aristide was elected president and then almost immediately forced out by the military junta led by General Cedras. In “Operation Uphold Freedom” President Clinton surrounded Haiti with US and Canadian warships and imposed an embargo.
NIGHTLINE sent me to Haiti with a fairly simple idea: spend a week in a small village or town and see what life is like under the embargo. It was because of some Haitian-American friends that I happened to meet Ray Hogan, Captain of the Frieda.
